Becoming
Twilight and dawn,
are my beloved times
for the same reason
my heart belongs
to fall and spring.
Neither is complete,
they exist in flux,
always in between
in the process of becoming
something they weren’t before,
but now will be until
a new day breaks.
I like to think
my spirit is a season
like fall or spring
and my heart is a time
like twilight or dawn.
For every fallen seed,
a new something grows,
and for every night
that the sun sinks into the sky,
in the morning, it always
and ever returns to rise.

ABOUT THIS POEM

This particular piece has been on my mind a lot this National Poetry Month, as spring starts to bloom all around. I wrote it as fall was letting out its dying breath back in December of 2017. I was on a trip to Seattle, my first time visiting the Pacific Northwest, and I remember writing it as I was sitting in this little rooftop garden that overlooked the bay and the Olympic mountains. I wrote so many new poems that week, and it was during that trip that I made the firm decision to put Becoming, and others, together into a collection I wanted to release in 2018. That project went on to become Unraveling Light, my debut book of poetry that this piece is from. So it felt fitting, as this week is the one year anniversary of the book’s Kickstarter campaign, to revisit it. It’s a reminder for me that who I am is this ever growing, changing, and evolving being, that takes time, death, and rebirth to become.
