Poetic Justice: Excerpt and Explanation From Fida Islaih

Posted April 27, 2018 by Amber in Poetic Justice / 670 Comments

Hi! I love reading excerpts of poems or poems in their entirety and knowing just how it came to be. That is why I’m so happy to present Fida with a poem from her recently published collection, Wilting Mind!

Poetic Justice is a month long event, beginning April 1st to April 30th in honor of National Poetry Month. Throughout April there will be interviews, guest posts, excerpts and other poetic posts. I hope you will follow along. To read the introductory post, read about my poetic background as well as the schedule for the month, you can find out more here.

Peace

Peace is the freedom from fear
breathing in fresh air,
being in nature
stepping away from the chaos

it is the calm around you
it is a greeting for when I see you
and I hope you feel it.

You can find peace in the ordinary things
like how someone’s voice brings you peace
you can find it in the smiles filled with hope

I feel peace when I don’t worry about anything
My heart is full of prayer as I look for peace
and I find peace knowing they will be answered.

This poem started off with two lines which ended up as the ending of the poem. It was inspired by a prompt I was given from @amaramalikpoetry to write 10 words of peace. I thought it would be the final product and shared it on social media. A few days later I was still thinking about it. I asked myself what is peace? How does peace feel? Then this poem came up. It felt like the message I needed to read after being heartbroken. And I hope it’s an uplifting message to readers, as well. You can find this poem in my newly released poetry book, Wilting Mind.

Taking her writing to new levels, Islaih shares her struggles with mental illness and chronic pain. This collection is her emotional journey through grief and the need to escape. Her writing takes us through the darkness of losing a friend and almost losing her mother, then ends with uplifting pieces of self-love.

You can add it on Goodreads. It is now available for purchase on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

“sometimes we don’t need poetry
but need simple words to touch our hearts.

Sometimes warriors are not in armor
but the ones with a smile.”
