Books I Can’t Wait To ‘Read’ This Summer

Posted June 25, 2019 by Amber in Top Ten Tuesday / 324 Comments

Hey everyone. It’s been a long time since I’ve done a Top Ten Tuesday, but I could not pass on doing this week’s! It gives me the chance to share some of the books I’m dying to read but will probably put off for one reason or another. A few of these I have checked out and rest I’m just interested in obtaining soon. This is where audiobooks come in handy. These books are in no particular order.

Top Ten Tuesday was formerly hosted by the ladies at The Broke and The Bookish but is now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. You can read more about past topics and future topics here.

Today’s topic is. . .

Books On My Summer 2019 TBR

~One~

I loved S. K. Ali’s debut novel, Saints & Misfits and was ecstatic when I heard she had another book coming out so soon. I guess that is one plus side when you wait a year to read an author‘s book, they’re likely to have another come out relatively soon. ? I originally checked this out from the library but I only managed to read a chapter before needing to return it. My problem is solved though because my library (finally. I’m so impatient) opirvhased the audiobook! If I’m able to tear myself away from listening to Degrassi, I’ll be listening to it instead! Among a couple other audiobooks mentioned below.

~Two~

I have loved Tiffany Jackson’s books since I first read Allegedly. This is going to be such an interesting change because it’s not a mystery like Allegedly and Monday’s Not Coming were. After listening to On The Come Up by Angie Thomas earlier this year, I’m excited to listen to another book about a rapper. I currently have the audiobook checked out.

~Three~

Truth be told, I never finished the Tiny Pretty Things duology Sona co-wrote with Dhonielle Clayton (I need to go back to it!). I used to be notorious at starting books and putting them away. This sounds so fascinating! This setting and plot is so unique! I marathoned watched Grey’s Anatomy and tweeted along during those watches, I can’t wait to see how Sona covers the medical field.

~Four~

I read Firsts as an e-ARC that I couldn’t put down years ago. I was even lucky enough to have Laurie do a guest post for YA Indulgences during the blog tour. I’ve started this one as an ebook loan but unfortunately wasn’t able to finish it in time. I think I’m going to definitely end up buying this one just to read it. Hopefully that[s sooner rather than later because Laurie has such a way with writing girls I love. Last Girl Lied To is a thriller too, so if Laurie’s name wasn’t (it was!) en0ugh to get me to read this, the mystery aspect sure is!

~Five~

T. E. Carter is one of those authors that I feel writes really thought-provoking and important  books but I don’t have the actual book to go off off. I know that this book deals with a brother’s actions while the story is focused on his sister. It reminded me of Girl Made of Stars by Ashley Herring Blake, an emotional novel that ripped my heart out. Families are so complicated and there are fine lines so I’m really interested in seeing how this one goes.

~Six~

Speaking of suspected important books, Girls On The Verge is not one to miss at all. As abortion laws are debated and passed, a novel about girls road-tripping just to have an abortion is so necessary.

~Seven~

I Wish You All The Best is my first and only 2019 relegate I’ve bought this far. My library doesn’t have it available in any format (yet, I hope), this I ‘had’ to buy it. I wanted to also support a non-binary author and their book.  I haven’t read a book with a non-binary character before. I think this is going to be such an important book for teens. It’s a crime I haven’t read this yet.

~Eight~

I loved Not The Girls You’re Looking For so much. It’s one of my favorite friendships books and has inspired my own WIP.  I love the contrast the summary shares with one girl being a cheerleader and another being an aspiring filmmaker. Not to mention there’s of course the misunderstanding from the past and alternating viewpoints. It’s an f/f romcom dream come true.

~Nine~

I love this cover so much. This is about Winnie, a fat girl who wants to enter a cooking competition against her grandma’s wishes to save her grandma’s diner. I love that this doesn’t back away from cooking given a stigma of fat people regarding food.

~Ten~

I have been interested in Belly Up ever since I saw it compared to Juno, a movie I’ve wanted to read a book in a similar vein of. I think YA is a little lacking when it comes to pregnant teenagers and sharing that experience.

~Eleven~

I love the sound of This Time Will Be Different. This involves a flower shop whose Japanese owners were swindled out of money during the internment camps. It’s going to have a community shaking plot when the shop gets sold. I think it’s important that Japanese Internment camps be discussed as events are going on. This reminds me a little of Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste N. G. with a community being divided.

~Twelve~

Screen Queens has one of my favorite novel aspects with the main characters being interns. Combine that with a competition in a male-dominated field and I’m so sold on it.

~Thirteen~

How summery is that cover? The title, Somewhere Only We Know reminds me of the song by Keene (similar with I Believe In A Thing Called Love by The Darkness). There are are so many reasons I want to devour this book. The first being it follows my favorite time-span: One day! Be still my pounding heart. The second is that K-Pop star is a main character and the other is a tabloid writer. Gah. I can’t wait to see what happens with those ‘occupations’. This one may have to wait a while since I still want to read I Believe In A Thing Called Love and The Way You Make Me Feel first

~Fourteen~

I’m prepared to be called the worst for not reading Sandhya’s previous books. I know, I know. Why not, Amber?? I couldn’t tell you! I’ve wanted to read her books for a while. Her newest one, There’s Something About Sweetie is one I cannot miss. I mean, look at that cover!  a plus-sized Indian girl. So gorgeous.

~Fifteen~

I love reading books where characters are both suffering through things and they meet someone to help them through it. I love how it’s going to deal with complicated families and love and the culture that surrounds both those topics. Once again, The Beauty of The Moment has such a (yes. . .) beautiful cover! I love all of the silver.

~Sixteen~

This cover is gorgeous and haunting. I’ve meant to read Kathleen’s debut Girl In Pieces and I haven’t yet but I really want to. Seeing the summary of How T0 Make Friends With The Dark makes it even more clear that both titles are sure to be heartbreaking. The latter deals with a girl who’s lost her mom. I get sad just thinking about that. I have this one as an audiobook loan through the library so I’ll be getting to it soon.
